Voisin ends testing on top as 21 drivers covered by less than a second

23 March 2023

Rodin Carlin’s Callum Voisin ended the two day Donington Park test by setting the quickest time of the week in the final session of the day.

The British-Swiss contender’s time of 1m22.365s was around four tenths of a second faster than last year’s pole time, and put him less than a tenth of a second clear of JHR Developments’ Matthew Rees, who set his best lap of 1m22.440s in the third session of the day, having also topped session two.

James Hedley, eyeing a second season in the series, potentially with Arden VRD, did his chances no harm at all with the third fastest time of the day, 0.038s ahead of the second JHR machine of David Morales.

Jarrod Waberski was the top Fortec runner in fifth with Chris Dittmann Racing’s Arthur Rogeon next up and 0.019s further back.

The next five drivers were covered by just 0.010s, with day one pace setter McKenzy Cresswell seventh this time for Elite, 0.002s ahead of Douglas Motorsport’s Tymek Kucharczyk, who was one thousandth of a second ahead of Chris Dittmann Racing’s Zak Taylor, with Joseph Loake (JHR) 0.002s behind and Costa Toparis (Rodin Carlin) a further 0.001s further back.

In a sign of the competitiveness of this year’s grid, the top-13 drivers were covered by less than half a second, with just 0.921s splitting the fastest driver of the day and Michael Shin (Hitech GP) in 21st place.

In all, 25 drivers took part in testing with this, with just over a fortnight remaining until the Oulton Park season opener.

Pace-setter Voisin said: “The track has been resurfaced over the winter so that’s definitely helped us but we’ve been working very hard to get to this point. It’s only testing and there’s still a long way to go, nobody really knows where each other is at, and we’re not going to know until qualifying at Oulton Park on the Saturday morning. But it’s nice to see my name up there.

“We go to Snetterton now and it’s a totally different track to Donington Park and will provide us some new challenges but I’m looking forward to some more running next week.

“We’re working in the right direction for sure, we don’t know what everyone else is doing, but as long as we’re up there that’s all we can do.”
