Season review: The GB3 year in stats

28 December 2023

As we continue our look back on a thrilling season of GB3 action, let’s recap some of the key statistics from the past year.

Eventual champion Callum Voisin inevitably topped many of the statistics for Rodin Carlin, but there was another name who also topped plenty of the charts, and pushed Voisin all the way in the main title race.

Most podiums – Callum Voisin (11)
Supreme speed, amazing consistency and grabbing results just when they’re most needed are the hallmarks of a champion, and Voisin’s 11 podiums throughout the season were a big factor in him landing the overall crown. The British-Swiss driver was on the podium at seven of the eight events in 2023, a feat unmatched by any other contender on the grid. His nearest rivals were Joseph Loake (JHR) and McKenzy Cresswell (Elite Motorsport), with eight podiums each. In total, 20 drivers claimed silverware across the season.

11 – Callum Voisin
8 – Joseph Loake, McKenzy Cresswell
7 – Alex Dunne
6 – Matthew Rees
(15 other drivers claimed podiums)

Laps led – Alex Dunne (42)
The reigning British F4 champion led 42 of this year’s 253 racing laps, equating to 16.6% of the season. In total, he led only one more lap than Hillspeed’s Daniel Mavlyutov, who proved a master of the reverse grid contests, while Voisin also led 41 laps. Loake, and Arden VRD’s James Hedley were the other drivers to lead more than 20 laps across the year, with 24 and 21 laps led respectively.

42 – Alex Dunne
41 – Daniel Mavlyutov, Callum Voisin
24 – Joseph Loake
21 – James Hedley
(seven other drivers led at least one lap in 2023)

Points for places gained in race three – Alex Dunne (72)
The reverse grid conclusion to each GB3 race event allows drivers to gain points for positions gained relative to their starting position, and with the fastest drivers usually starting at the back, it’s not unusual to see big gains. But 2023 proved bigger than any other season, as Alex Dunne earned 72 points across the year just from race three position gains alone! That’s 18 more than in any other season (2021 champion Zak O’Sullivan was the previous record holder with 55), while Callum Voisin’s 64 places gained would have easily put him top in any other year! And bear in mind that these figures could have been even higher, as race three at Silverstone was cancelled due to rain!

72 – Alex Dunne
64 – Callum Voisin
48 – Joseph Loake, McKenzy Cresswell
41 – James Hedley
(20 other drivers earned at least one point for places gained)

Fastest laps – Alex Dunne (eight)
Another chart topper for Dunne, who set 8 fastest laps across the season, five more than any other driver on the grid. Half of those came in the final two events as he pushed Voisin all the way, with pairs of fastest laps at Zandvoort and Donington Park. His other fastest laps came in pairs too, courtesy of efforts at Spa-Francorchamps and Snetterton earlier in the season. Loake was Dunne’s nearest challenger with three fastest laps, while Matthew Rees, Tymek Kucharczyk and McKenzy Cresswell claimed two each.

8 – Alex Dunne
3 – Joseph Loake
2 – Matthew Rees, Tymek Kucharczyk, McKenzy Cresswell
(six other drivers set at least one fastest race lap)

Pole positions – Callum Voisin (six)
A bit of history here as Voisin claimed the Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup for the second year running, the first time a driver has retained the honour since the awards inception in the BRDC F4 days of 2013. Raw pace is just about the most desirable skill for any race driver, and Voisin has proven he has it in abundance across his two seasons in single-seaters so far. Rees and Loake enjoyed three each, with Voisin’s teammate John Bennett claiming two at Silverstone early in the year, with Dunne and Cresswell earning one each.

6 – Callum Voisin
3 – Matthew Rees, Joseph Loake
2 – John Bennett
1 – Alex Dunne, McKenzy Cresswell

Wins – Alex Dunne (five)
It seemed for a while that Dunne could only win in continental Europe, after double victories at Spa and Zandvoort, but he finally brought that run to an end with a fighting triumph in race two at Donington Park, which kept his title chances alive all the way to the final race. Fellow title contender Joseph Loake and aforementioned reverse grid master Mavlyutov enjoyed four victories each, while Voisin, Hedley and Arden VRD teammate Noah Ping were the other contenders to win more than once. Four other drivers stood on the top step throughout the year.

5 – Alex Dunne
4 – Joseph Loake, Daniel Mavlyutov
2 – James Hedley, Noah Ping, Callum Voisin
(four other drivers won one race)

Team wins – Hitech Pulse-Eight, Hillspeed, JHR Developments (five)
Turns out if your team began with the letter H, or was based in Derbyshire (or in Hillspeed’s case, a combination of both!), your squad was in for a good year! Hitech Pulse-Eight, Hillspeed and JHR Developments all enjoyed five wins throughout the season, with Dunne responsible for all of Hitech’s triumphs. Mavlyutov earned four of Hillspeed’s five, with teammate Gerrard Xie joining the winner’s circle in the final race of the season at Donington Park, while Loake took four of JHR’s victories, with Matthew Rees earning the other at Silverstone. Arden VRD were the nearest challengers with four wins.

5 – Hitech Pulse-Eight, Hillspeed, JHR Developments
4 – Arden VRD
2 – Rodin Carlin, Elite Motorsport
