Should Alex Dunne win the GB3 Championship this weekend, he’d become the first driver to win the British F4 and GB3 titles in succession, and would also see him follow in the footsteps of current champion Luke Browning as a winner in both categories.
He’s had an up and down campaign, but after a double victory at Zandvoort, is right back in the fight. Here’s how the Irishman is feeling ahead of the final event.
How do you sum up your season as a whole?
“I think definitely to date it probably could have gone a little bit better. I think we had a bit of a rocky start but throughout the middle of the season with the exception of Spa I would say, it wasn’t really up to my standard. I’ve had a little bit of bad luck here and there, and a few things didn’t really go our way, so to be honest, to still be in with a shout of winning the championship, considering how I would have liked the season to have gone, I think it’s not been too bad.”
You’ve been in the mix all season, but heading into Zandvoort it felt like it was the furthest away you’d been all year, and then leaving the event, it feels like you’re closer than ever before. How have you dealt with the contrasting fortunes this season?
“I’m used to being in tricky situations, I’ve had a few times through my career, so it hasn’t really changed a whole lot. I knew going into Zandvoort I needed to raise my game a little bit, bring my best and do the best I possibly could to try and make the gap in the championship smaller. So I’m glad I did that.”
What do you feel your chances are this weekend, is Donington a circuit likely to suit you?
“I would say so, I think. When I raced here in F4 I got two wins and a second in the reverse grid race, so I’ve gone well here before, and so far in testing the pace has been pretty strong. Hopefully we can go well.”
If you win this, you follow in the footsteps of Luke Browning in being a double British champion, what would that mean to you?
“It would be pretty special to win two championships back to back, F4 and then GB3, it would be pretty special. Obviously, moving forward winning as many championships as you can is the best possible way to make the next steps, so hopefully I can do it.”
