JHR Developments’ Matthew Rees reinvigorated his GB3 Championship chances with his best weekend of the season last time out at Silverstone.
Despite the third race being cancelled due to weather conditions, the Welshman still banked 64 points from the event, his biggest haul of the campaign so far, courtesy of his first victory of the season and then second place in race two.
That means he’s only 56 points away from championship leader Callum Voisin, and within striking range in the championship battle.
“We had a good weekend at Silverstone which means we’re still in contention for the championship,” he comments.
The 2021 British F4 champion heads to the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, where he took his first GB3 victory 12 months ago, and knows a repeat performance will move him closer to the fight. Crucially, he was within a tenth of a second of the outright pace in last week’s test day.
“Brands Hatch was a great circuit for us last year, starting at the front, taking a win, and finishing with the Sunoco Fastest Driver of the Weekend award.
“Testing went well recently, and it was really close, so we’ll have to make sure we work hard to qualify well as overtaking will be quite tough once the races get going.”
While he’s back in the title hunt, he’s not thinking too far ahead, and is simply aiming to make the most of each points scoring opportunity.
“I am just going to keep focusing on each session as they come and as long as we keep getting the results we know we’re capable of, then we should still be up there at the end of the season.”
