GB3 Qualifying: Sharp scythes to pole at Oulton Park

30 March 2024

Rodin Motorsport's reigning British F4 champion Louis Sharp started his GB3 campaign in perfect fashion with a sensational double pole position in qualifying this morning at Oulton Park.

The New Zealander dominated his maiden qualifying session in the series, and his time of 1m29.292s was almost three tenths of a second clear of JHR Developments' John Bennett, with Sharp's Rodin teammate Ugo Ugochukwu third.

Sharp was at one point almost half a second clear of the field, and though Bennett trimmed the gap down to 0.287s at the end of the session, the pole margin was still the biggest in this series at Oulton Park since 2016.

Sharp's second best lap of 1m29.554s was enough to put him on pole for race two also, ensuring he claimed the full £500 of prize money on offer in the Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup.

Outside the top-three, Gerrard Xie led Hitech Pulse-Eight's charge with the fourth fastest time, a tenth further back from McLaren junior Ugochukwu, and 0.008s clear of Elite's McKenzy Cresswell in fifth.

Hitech pair Tymek Kucharczyk and Will Macintyre were next up in sixth and seventh, with the third Rodin car of Arthur Rogeon eighth.

Elite's Jarrod Waberski claimed ninth on the grid for race one, with Fortec's GB4 graduate Colin Queen completing the top-10 for the first race of the year, which is due to commence at 3pm local time.

The provisional grid for race two puts Sharp ahead of Bennett again, with Xie rising to third ahead of Ugochukwu. Cresswell is fifth once more ahead of Kucharczyk and Waberski, with Macintyre, Seb Murray and Patrick Heuzenroeder the top-10.

Heuzenroder qualified 12th fastest for race one, and therefore is in line the race three pole position.
