The stats that made Louis Sharp a GB3 champion

10 October 2024

Louis Sharp is the latest driver to become a GB3 champion, following in the footsteps of most recent winners Zak O’Sullivan, Luke Browning and Callum Voisin. To become champion in one of Europe’s most competitive junior series, a driver has excel all-round, and Sharp certainly did that. Let’s look into some of the numbers behind his title success.

Podiums – 10
GB3 champions generally score a double figure sum of podium finishes, and Sharp is certainly no different. The British-born New Zealander stood on the podium in six of the year’s eight race weekends, and secured doubles at Oulton Park, Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone and Donington Park, while further top-threes at the Hungaroring and Brands Hatch took his tally to 10 across the 23 races held in 2024. Only title rivals John Bennett and Tymek Kucharczyk claimed more podiums, with 11 each.

Wins – five
Sharp’s victory in the penultimate race of the season at Brands Hatch not only edged him closer to securing the title, but also ensured he’d end the year with more wins than any other driver. Having started his first GB3 campaign in fine style with victory at Oulton Park, he had to wait nine more races before his next win came at the Hungaroring. There, he went from fifth on the grid to the lead on the first lap in one of the most impressive drives of the year. A double win during the penultimate weekend at Donington Park was perhaps the most pivotal of the campaign, as he edged clear in the title race, while his fifth triumph in round 23 all but guaranteed the title.

Laps led – 68
Having led six races, more than any other driver, Sharp was at the front for 68 laps this season, almost exactly a quarter of the entire campaign! That figure was more than double the tallies of title rivals Kucharczyk (32) and Bennett (27). Sharp’s nearest rivals in the laps led stakes were teammate Arthur Rogeon (54) and VRD Racing by Arden’s Nikita Johnson (33), with all their laps led coming in reverse grid contests.

Pole positions – five
Sharp started at the front of the field more times than anyone else too, thanks to his superb qualifying performances. He took five poles throughout the campaign, with pole doubles at Oulton Park and Donington Park, and a crucial race two pole at Brands Hatch. He converted four of those poles into victory.

Highest weekend score – 86
A big scorer throughout the campaign, Sharp was the only contender to score in excess of 80 points at more than one weekend in 2024. His biggest tally came at Donington Park in September, where two wins and a sixth place netted a haul of 86, while a win, a second and a fifth at Oulton Park resulted in 82 points. Only Kucharczyk scored more points in a single weekend, with 91 points at Spa.
