Hugo Schwarze will make a return to the GB3 Championship for the season opening event at Silverstone with VRD Racing.
The German driver, who made his single-seater debut in GB3 last year, finished ninth overall in the series last year, with a best result of fourth at both Zandvoort and the Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit.
In total, Schwarze secured 13 top-10 finishes on the way to ninth overall in his first single-seater campaign, the highest placed slicks and wings newcomer in last year’s standings.
Prior to his GB3 graduation, Hugo had claimed the runner-up spot in the 2023 Ginetta Junior Championship, taking two victories, three pole positions, five fastest laps and a total of 11 podiums. In the same year, he was crowned the Rotax Max Challenge Germany Wintercup champion in karting.
His karting career had only began the season beforehand, competing in Rotax Max across Germany and Europe.
Having already raced in sports cars this year, he now joins Dan Mitchell’s VRD Racing squad in GB3 for the Silverstone season opener, with the team looking to add to its tally of six wins across the past two campaigns.
Hugo Schwarze said: “I’m really excited to get back going in the GB3 car with VRD Racing, obviously it’s a new car this year and I’ve really enjoyed my testing in it so far. Compared to the other drivers on the grid, I’ve not done as much testing in the new car, so I’m targeting top-10s in the first race weekend. As long as I get to grips with the car, get some good laps in and have some good racing, I’ll be happy with that.
“We’ve been working really well together as a team, and I’m looking forward to getting out at Silverstone. We’ve got some great guys here, my engineer Alex [Ridge] worked in Formula E before as well and I can already tell that we will be flying at Silverstone. I hope we can do more rounds as the season goes on, but for now the focus is on Silverstone and we’ll see what happens after.”
VRD Racing Team Principal Dan Mitchell said: “We’re very excited to welcome Hugo to the team for Silverstone. He proved last year that he’s a very dependable and talented driver, especially given his experience, and he’s shown really well in his testing with us so far at Silverstone and Donington Park. We’re hopeful that we can extend our relationship beyond Silverstone, as I think we can do great things together as the season goes on.”
