The GB3 graduates to follow across the IndyCar paddock in 2025

26 February 2025

The 2025 IndyCar season gets underway in Florida this weekend, and across the USA’s headline single-seater category and its support series, there’s 11 of our alumni to cheer on.

Here’s who’s hoping to impress stateside in 2025.

IndyCar

Colton Herta (2016 BRDC British F3 race winner)

The American driver competed in six BRDC British F3 races with Carlin in 2016, as he substituted for Lando Norris. Herta was victorious at Brands Hatch that year, and took two podiums at Oulton Park, before moving into Indy Lights title contention for 2017 and 2018, and making his IndyCar debut later in the latter. Since then, he’s established himself as one of the main contenders, winning just his third IndyCar race in 2019, and now has nine successes to his name. Seriously linked to an AlphaTauri F1 drive for the 2023 season, he looks like a prime contender for an F1 seat with the new Cadillac squad for 2026, but will be one of the favourites for the 2025 IndyCar title with Andretti Global.

Alex Palou (2014 BRDC F4 driver at Silverstone)

Palou contested just the one BRDC F4 round in 2014, at Silverstone with the Sean Walkinshaw Racing squad, and claimed a best finish of fourth. An erratic few years followed as he moved through GP3, Japanese F3, Formula 2, Super GT and Super Formula amongst other series, before his big IndyCar break in 2020. He rapidly established himself as IndyCar’s leading talent in 2021 as he marched to his first title, with two more following in 2023 and 2024. Chip Ganassi Racing has been his home since 2021, and he remains at the squad as he pursues a fourth title in 2025.

Marcus Armstrong (2016 BRDC F3 Autumn Trophy)

Armstrong’s sole taste of what was to become the GB3 Championship came in 2016 as he contested the BRDC British F3 Autumn Trophy. Although ineligible to score points, he registered a fourth and two sevenths in the mini series, which would have been enough to put him inside the top-six in the standings. Race wins in FIA F3 and F2 followed, before moving into IndyCar for the 2023 season. His first podium finish came last year, and the New Zealander heads to Meyer Shank Racing this time around.

Louis Foster (2020 BRDC British F3 race winner)

Three wins powered the British driver to third place in the 2020 BRDC British F3 final standings, and after a season in Europe, Foster has raced to great acclaim in the USA. He won the Indy Pro 2000 title in 2022, and was the dominant winner of the 2024 Indy NXT category last year with eight wins from the 14 races. Signed up by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, this weekend’s action at St Petersburg marks his IndyCar debut.

IndyNXT

Seb Murray (2024 GB3 graduate)

The Scottish driver is the most recent GB3 graduate to head to the States in pursuit of his motorsport dreams, and this year’s campaign is his first outside of Europe or the Middle East. Having also raced in GB4 in 2023, Murray moved up to GB3 with Chris Dittmann Racing last year, and proved a top-10 challenger in his first campaign at that level. He’ll race for Andretti Cape Indy NXT this season.

Jonathan Browne (2021 GB3 podium finisher)

Irishman Browne joined the GB3 grid midway through the 2021 season with Hillspeed, and scored a podium finish in his debut race at Silverstone. Three further top-10 finishes followed, before moving to Indy Pro 2000 the following season, USF Pro in 2023 and Indy NXT last year. He remains in the category this time around, but switches to Chip Ganassi Racing.

Tommy Smith (2022 GB3 race winner)

Smith made his GB3 debut in 2021 and remained with the squad for the 2022 campaign, taking a win at Spa and a podium at Oulton Park. Graduating to FIA F3 in 2023, the Australian remained in the F1 support paddock last year, but has opted to move Stateside this year with HMD Motorsports.

Nikita Johnson (2024 GB3 race winner)

Not technically a graduate (yet!), given the 16-year-old’s main campaign in 2025 will be a GB3 challenge with Hitech, but Johnson’s racing background is in the USA, and he will conduct a partial campaign in IndyCar’s main support series this year with HMD Motorsports.

Bryce Aron (2022 GB3 race winner)

The American driver won in GB3 at Donington Park in his sophomore 2022 campaign, and also took podiums at Silverstone and the Donington return. After a season in Europe the year after, he made the move back to the USA last year in Indy NXT and took two podiums, and will aim for the title in 2025 with HMD Motorsports.

Max Taylor (2024 GB3 driver at Donington Park)

Taylor delivered a strong one-off GB3 appearance last year at Donington Park, and having won the USF Juniors title last year and finished third in USF2000, Taylor could be a contender to watch in Indy NXT, where he’ll fill in for Johnson when he prioritises his GB3 commitments. But Taylor has a busy season regardless, which we’ll come to shortly…

USF Pro 2000

Jacob Douglas (2024 GB3 driver)

The New Zealander enjoyed GB3 outings last year with Chris Dittmann Racing at Silverstone and Donington Park, and he’s now building up for a campaign in the third tier of USA open wheel racing, and will compete for Pabst Racing.

Max Taylor
That man Taylor again. Dovetailing his substitute appearances in Indy NXT, the 17-year-old will prioritise his USF Pro 2000 campaign with VRD as he aims for another title. Dan Mitchell’s squad is a powerhouse across the Atlantic, so the combination will be hotly tipped in 2025.
