GB3 runner-up Dunne secures FIA F2 seat with Rodin Motorsport

05 February 2025

2023 GB3 Championship runner-up Alex Dunne will move up to the FIA Formula 2 Championship this year with the Rodin Motorsport team.

The Irishman won five times in GB3, as he pushed Rodin’s Callum Voisin all the way in the battle for the title. He was particularly successful at European venues, with double wins at Spa-Francorchamps and Zandvoort.

Following his GB3 success, which came after a dominant British F4 campaign in 2022, Dunne moved up to FIA F3 last year and took podiums at Barcelona and Monza, having also taken second place in the Macau Grand Prix qualifying race during the winter.

He returned to Macau at the end of 2024, and took sixth place in the main Grand Prix event.

His rapid ride through the ranks has also been recognised by McLaren, and was inducted into the team’s Driver Development Programme last year, while also being named as the reserve and development driver for the NEOM McLaren Formula E squad.

Dunne already has experience of F2 machinery after taking part in the post-season Abu Dhabi test last year, and has now committed to his first campaign in the prime F1 feeder series.

"I’m pleased to be able to confirm my plans for the 2025 season, which will see me joining Rodin Motorsport and participating in Formula 2” Dunne said.

“I’m looking forward to the upcoming season and thankful for everyone’s support in getting me to this stage – I can’t wait to hit the ground running.”

"We are delighted to welcome Alex to Rodin Motorsport," said Benn Huntingford, Rodin Motorsport’s Sporting Director and F2 Team Manager. "Alex's talent, dedication, and passion for racing align perfectly with our team's values and ambitions. We are confident that he will make a significant impact in the upcoming season and know that he is capable of enjoying a really great season with the team.”

Dunne's addition to the grid means seven drivers with GB3 experience will be on this year's F2 grid. Dunne teams up with 2021 race-winner Christian Mansell at Rodin, while 2022 champion Luke Browning is moving up to the series full-time with Hitech having made cameo appearances in 2024, once his race-winning FIA F3 campaign had been completed.

Kush Maini, Max Esterson, Cian Shields and 2024 GB3 runner-up John Bennett, the first driver to go direct from GB3 to F2, are also on the current entry list for the 2025 season.
